R2 Design

Beautiful work from Porto, Portugal-based studio R2 Design. Browsing through their posters was both inspiring and time-saving, as now there is no need to go looking for other sites to gawk at for at least a few days.

YES Studio

Here is some great work by YES, a London-based studio. Pictured above is work for Deyan Sudjic’s The Language of Things, and redesigns for some classic titles for Penguin.

Swiss Graphic Design and Advertising by Geigy

“Corporate Diversity”
is a new book that coincides with an exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, about the Geigy chemical company. Designers such as Steff Geissbuhler and Karl Gerstner worked under the direction of Max Schmid, contributing significantly to the spread of Swiss graphic design. Here is a video inside the exhibition. Can’t wait to get my copy.

Der Zeitplan

Dragana got me this awesome day planner, which is way better than the oh-so-obvious “Helvetica Moleskine” that everyone is raving about. It rules. Get it? Rules.

Otl Aicher: 1972 Munich/Kiel

Insect54 just posted some great images of Otl Aicher’s guides/maps/etc for the 1972 Munich Olympics and Kiel Sailing events. Be sure to check out his other Flickr sets…

Jan Conradi Lecture on Unimark International

Jan Conradi, a Professor of Graphic Design at SUNY Fredonia, and author of “Unimark International: The Design of Business and the Business of Design” will be giving a lecture tonight at UArts entitled “Innovations and Implications: Corporate Identity and Unimark International”. Should be good! (Her book will be released this fall by Lars Müller Publishers)

Brendan Monroe

I’ve been a fan of Brendan Monroe‘s work for awhile now, so I’m excited to see that a new monograph has been published by Paper Museum Press. (edit: Brendan pointed me to the designer of the book, Jordan Stark…) The dust jacket folds out into a poster, too!

Book (Design) Stories

Here is an incredible archive of modernist book design in Germany and Switzerland, from 1925 to 1965 (and beyond). Pictured above is a cover by Emil Ruder (1960), and a cover by Jan Tschichold (1930). Be sure to explore the index

NEWS!: “Layout Essentials: 100 Design Principles for Using Grids”

My Franklin Gothic editorial spreads (from Jennifer Bernstein’s Type Systems class) are featured in the newly published book from Rockport Publishers: “Layout Essentials: 100 Design Principles for Using Grids” by Beth Tondreau!
My work shares a spread with Daniela Lien (UArts GD 2008) under the section “Breaking The Rules: Follow Your Heart”. Pretty exciting!
The book is a great reference for using grids, so check it out.
